The need for soccer databases
Categories: Database Development, Match Data Collection
I haven't been on the site in a while, and for good reason. Work has picked up (thankfully!) and I've gotten bogged down with papers to read and analysis questions that need answering. I am realizing just how lazy I really am, which is funny to read from someone with three university degrees. (Or maybe that's a good thing, if you believe this guy.)
One way this manifests itself is in my search for data to address some of my analysis issues. I don't like to do the same task over and over again if I don't have to. I am quickly realizing that I need a database for soccer data that keeps me from recreating the wheel again and again when I have a question that needs answering. Such a database needs to be flexible, easily searchable, and extensible. There are probably some other traits this database has to have.
To this end, I'm building a database of the current Hexagonal, and I have some tables and fields that I think make sense. The idea is that if I like this database perhaps I could use it for other leagues and competitions. If people are interested, perhaps I could write up something, sketch out the tables and their relationships, and post it here. I'm still learning about relational databases and database management in general, but perhaps some of my readers have experience and I'd appreciate their input.
UPDATE: I've received some good feedback in the comments, so perhaps I can put something together in a couple of days. I'm really busy at work this week and I'm going out of town on Friday, so if I don't have a write-up completed by Thursday it will happen by the following Monday.
